Tips on posting messages
- Choose your subject heading carefully. Ten times as many people will read your subject line as will read your message.
- Think the message through carefully before you post it. Having just one message in a given thread reflects much better on you than if you need multiple posts to explain one idea.
- Accept that other people have the right of free speech, and may have opinions differing from yours.
- Do not post the same message multiple times, either on the same message board or on different boards.
- Post whenever you want to, but do not feel obligated to respond to every post.
- People judge you by your posts, not by what others say about you.
- Do not make personal attacks on others. Feel free to explain why you believe differently, but calling names serves no purpose here.
- If you are asking a question or requesting information, use a question mark in the subject line.
Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
Please follow the guidelines below when posting picks.
- Keep all your pick-related posts in one thread for the week. For the next week you can start a new thread.
- For each pick, please also list the betting number and the price at which that pick is available now. You may if you wish post limit orders -- teams to bet only if we can find your price or better, and if we can't find your price then the pick is void.
- Please limit your picks to teams that you recommend at readily available prices. For bets against a spread, please use spreads readily available at -110 or better. "Readily available" means the price is available at 20% or more of sportsbooks. We are interested in the W-L record that we are able to achieve by following your advice; we are not interested in the W-L record of bets you made at prices that we cannot readily find. We understand that someone who shops aggressively to bet your picks will achieve a win rate of about 2% higher than the win rate you report for your picks.
- After all the picks in a thread have been decided, post the W-L results for your posted picks for that week. If you also report units won, please use the standard 11/10. Please also include your W-L results for your posted picks for that sport for the year to date. When you start a new thread for the next week's games, please include your YTD W-L record for posted picks for that sport in the subject line. YTD means fiscal year for that sport: Include all picks you make on preseason, regular season and playoff games. Reset your record to 0-0 at the start of the next season.
- You cannot undo a pick; if you change your mind, it still counts as part of your W-L record. However, you may pick the other side and eat the vig. If you change your mind on a pick, please say so rather than deleting the original post.
- Do not pick the same team more than once for the same game. For example if you pick a team at -14 and then the line drops to -10 making you like your team even more, you can increase your units bet on that team but do not treat your team -10 as another pick. If the game result is your team wins by 13, your official pick loses but your units results include both wins and losses.
- Please combine sides and totals into a single W-L record. Please do not include results of parlays or teasers in the W-L record you report for your sides and totals. If your predictions include parlays or teasers, please report your W-L results for them as a tally separate from your tally for sides and totals. In sports like baseball where you are betting money lines, please indicate how many units ahead or behind based on wagering one unit on dogs and wagering to win one unit on favorites.
What are Box Seats and MVP?
SharpSportsBetting.com has both free and membership message boards. The Bleachers are free; anyone can read and post messages on them. A password (which you can get for free) is required for posting, but no password is required for reading messages in the Bleachers. Box Seats and MVP are members-only message boards, and passwords are required to access them. MVP membership includes access to all four football and basketball Box Seats forums in addition to the MVP General forum. Box Seats are hosted by experts in betting that sport. Click on "Host W-L Records" in the left frame for information on the Box Seats.
Return to topWhat are hosts?
Hosts are expert sports bettors who have agreed to share their picks and expertise with us. They are compensated; they receive a percentage of membership fees. All our hosts are people who have risen through the ranks. Each person who is now a host started by posting picks and commentary on the free pages, developed a reputation for expertise, and then was tapped to become a host. Some of the people who currently are demonstrating their talent on the free pages will be hosts in the future. Hosts may not work for any sportsbook during the seasons of sports they are hosting. A host who wants to work for a sportsbook between seasons must notify SSB's management in advance so that his Box Seat and MVP password access can be temporarily disabled.
Return to topWhat are postbusters and what do they do?
Postbusters are volunteers who have passwords to delete any Bleachers post. Below are the guidelines they follow.
- Posts that are only ads, without information or picks, should be deleted.
- Posts whose primary purpose is to draw attention to another site may be deleted.
- Posts containing picks should also contain the person's season-to-date W-L record on posted picks. The first time a person posts picks without disclosing his W-L record, do not delete the post; someone will append a request for that information. On subsequent pick posts by the same person: If there is no W-L record, then delete the post. Picks with accurate W-L records are welcome on SharpSportsBetting.com, even if the intent of the post is to interest people in paying for picks on another site.
- Posts on the wrong page of SharpSportsBetting.com should be deleted. If you delete a post due to its being on the wrong page, please email (if possible) the poster explaining why the post was deleted.
- Posts containing no material having anything to do with sports betting do not have to (but may) be deleted.
- Posts that were orphaned after someone deleted another post do not have to (but may) be deleted if they are not able to stand alone.
- Posts attacking a person should be deleted. Criticisms of products and ideas should not be deleted. Example: It is okay to say that a book stinks, but not okay to say that the author stinks. It's okay to think that another poster is an idiot, but not okay to say so.
- Do not delete a post just because the author is mistaken in his knowledge of sports or betting.
- Do not delete a post just because you disagree with it.
- When in doubt, don't delete the post.
Does SharpSportsBetting.com use cookies?
Each message board on SharpSportsBetting.com uses a cookie to remember your most recent choice of how to display the message index (how many days-worth and what format). It also stores the name and email address you entered the last time you posted a message, and whether you wanted email notification of replies, so you don't have to enter these each time you compose a new message. It keeps track of the time of your last visit so that messages posted since then will be marked as being NEW.
Return to topWhat does (nt) mean at the end of a title of a post?
When a post's title ends in (nt) this means "no text." At times, a user will want to make a post, where the entire information from the post is contained in the title. If there is no text in the message, then the software will automatically add the "nt" onto the title.
Return to topHow can I quote a previous article when I post a followup?
With most browsers, you can use a mouse to copy text from one article and paste it into the window where you enter the new article. Please insert quotation marks or other formatting to identify the quoted text.
Return to topWhy didn't my post show up?
Your post most likely did not show up because your browser did not reload the page; the page instead was pulled out of cache. Hit "Reload" or "Refresh" while holding down the Shift key, and your post should then appear.
Return to topHow can I tell which articles I've read?
Most browsers provide an easy way, such as using different colors, to distinguish between links you've followed and those you haven't. Your browser may allow you to change the way this distinction is shown. If you view the message pages with a different browser than usual, articles read with the other browser won't show up as having been read.
Return to topOn a message index page, what does a number in parentheses after the message subject mean?
If there is a number in parentheses, it indicates the number of times that particular message has been viewed.
Return to topWhere are all the messages? How do I change the message display?
Sharp Sports Betting has thousands of old messages which are archived on each message index page. This can be useful for searching for a subject that interests you.
To Search for old messages, use the "Search" feature at the top of any main message index page. Put in the time frame and the search terms or person's posting handle that you are looking for and click "Search Messages."
Our message board software has many display modes. You may set it to display posts from just the last 3 days or you may set it to display messages for the last several months. Also there are different formats for display. The most popular are "Reversed Compressed Listing" and "Mixed Threaded Listing." There are other styles such as "Guestbook" and "Chronological." To change the length of time for messages displayed or the format in which they are displayed, click on "Set Preferences" at the top of the page. Configure it to the time and type that you like and click "View Message Index." Cookies will remember the format you like for that page so your preferences for that page will be remembered the next time you visit.

For the NFL, the first paid weekend will be the first weekend of regular-season games All playoff games will count as one week for purposes of cancellation refunds, so each week of NFL regular-season NFL games represents 1/18 of the total season.
For college football, the first paid weekend will be the first weekend with a full schedule of games. All games played after the last full weekend of games, which generally means all games played after Thanksgiving including all bowl games, will count as one week for purposes of cancellation refunds.
